WHAT IS A FRAME?

There is a bit of confusion sometimes around what constitutes a bike frame. If you are in the market to build a custom BMX bike then you probably already know exactly what a frame is. For someone new to BMX biking they may think that the frame is the entirety of the bike minus the wheels, pedals, seat, and handlebars. The frame is the diamond-shaped main component of the bike; it is the piece of metal that connects the back wheel to the front of the bike with the bracket for the seat in between. There are three categories of BMX frames and which one you get depends on how you ride.

There are race frames, which are for Olympic-style track racing – these bikes are built light for speed and are not suited for tricks or anything high impact. There are also freestyle or street frames. These are for skatepark riding, ramp riding, and dirt jumping. A freestyle bike frame will usually be minimalist with pegs for riding rails and may be brakeless. Lastly, there are cruiser frames which are bigger than a standard BMX frame so that you can use 24″ wheels instead of standard 20″ wheels. What you do with your BMX bike will determine what kind of frame you get.

WHAT'S IN A FRAME?

There are a few different materials that most bike frames are made of, and they all provide something different to the rider. Aluminum is one option, which is cost effective and lightweight, though it is not very strong and so will not be a good frame for doing tricks with.

Chromoly steel is similar to aluminum in that it is very light, though aluminum is lighter. It is stronger, though, and has the flexibility to allow it to handle tricks (and wipeouts). Titanium is expensive, but it is both lightweight and very strong. One downside to titanium though is that it is hard to weld, which can lead to broken joints. Carbon fibre is extremely light and is best for racing but should not be used for any tricks as it is prone to impact damage.

WHAT'S ON A FRAME?

Of course, you need to think about aesthetics. Bike frames come in an insane variety of colours and designs. Just remember that your BMX frame won’t stay perfect forever. It’s going to get scratched, especially if you do tricks. It’s nice to have a frame that looks great, but it’s better to have a frame that won’t break.
